The Scammers
For newcomers it can be extremely difficult to determine whether a site selling file-sharing software belongs to the original creator, especially now so many scams exist using original or modified logos, slogans and images from their official pages.
If you are a P2P software distributor, you may wish to consider linking to P2PScams.info to help prevent your users from buying into services claiming to be your own.
As a rule of thumb, no Peer-2-Peer file-sharing software costs money. The few exceptions would be making a donation to a project you wish to support, purchasing an 'upgrade' from an official distributor (as mentioned below) and paying for Usenet / newsgroup access from a premium news provider.
A few P2P vendors such as LimeWire and BearShare sell legitimate "Pro" versions of their software at a price. These have been carefully left out of the list.

Any domain owned by EarthStation 5 (aka ES5 / ESV / Earthreactor) should be avoided. They have many domains set up to steal traffic, but are all easily identifiable. Due to way ES5 has conducted itself, we strongly consider EarthStation 5 a rogue company. Examples of their rogue nature include spreading lies about various sources, lies about their application, mass spamming, security flaws added purposely to their software, death threats made to various respected names in the file-sharing community, handing user information out freely, domain cloning and hijacking, admitted Denial of Service (DoS) attacks against BitTorrent sites and Google bombing.
A site going by the name "Openwares.org", posing as a free software download directory, has been set up to take advantage of legitimate freeware authors. This site repackages free and open source software and bundles the installers with malware such as spyware or dialers. Worse still, the owners of Openwares.org have been purposely uploading their malware-infested installers to CNET's Download.com in an attempt to scam a much wider audience. 
Much of the software Openwares has been targeting are file-sharing programs and security applications such as PeerGuardian and ProtoWall.

Other stuff to be wary of:
Search engines. Although in themselves, search engines such as Google are an original and established method of finding something you're interested in, a large number of results and "sponsored links" or ads that can be found when searching for file-sharing related information are linked to the scam sites listed above. If you find a link while searching that you're unsure about, by all means ask about it on the forum.
